Cooper sets new national record

Camagüey.- The middle-distance runner from Camagüey, Daily Cooper, set a new national record in the 1500 meters, stopping the clocks at 4:06.53 during the V Confrontation Test held this week at the Panamerican Stadium in Havana.

With this mark, Cooper surpassed the historic record of 4:09.57 held by the outstanding runner Adriana Muñoz, since the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo 2003.

Thus, the Agramontina launched her candidacy for the title at the regional event that will take place in the Dominican capital itself. Three years earlier in San Salvador, she obtained a silver medal, with 4:11.80, behind the Venezuelan Joselyn Brea (4:11.80).

Daily will also run the 800 meters, a event in which she reached the semifinals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Another athlete from the land of El Mayor who stood out in the V Confrontation Test was Yarima García, who dominated the 100 meters, with a time of 11.58. Her pursuers were far behind: Enis Pérez (12.07) and Susan Abreu (12.29).

Camila Rodríguez (55.05), Suany Rodríguez (55.64) and Halle Oquendo (59.00) were the top three in the 400m, while Greysis Robles (12.90), Lisyanet Ruiz (12.96) and Jocelyn Echazabal (13.05) reigned in the 100m hurdles.

According to the digital newspaper Jit, in the long jump, Rosmaiby Quesada stretched to 6.63, the youth athlete Dianelys Alacán threw the javelin at 6.16, and Yanisley Carrión fell just two centimeters short of six meters.

Yaritza de la Caridad Martínez threw the discus to 64 meters and 50 centimeters, without any opposition; Wendy Urrutinier was the only one who surpassed 40 meters (42.53), in the javelin throw, and only Karelia James, with 3.91 in the pole vault, was the one who could exceed 3.90.

Reynadlo Espinosa led the 100 meters, with 10.21, followed by Giorvis Domínguez (10.50) and York Suárez, from the national team for the disabled, with 10.73.

In the 400 meters in the men's category, the youth athlete Yohendris Bientz stopped the clocks at 47.66, in the final of that event, to defeat his teammates from the senior national team Yoandys Lescay (48.08) and Pierre Castillo (48.18).

In the 1500, in a tight finish, Hansel Abreu (3:46.18) defeated Oleisy Ferrer (3:46.86), while the third place went to Daisnel Barbán (3:53.03).

While Luis Enrique Zayas only needed a modest two meters and ten centimeters to win in the high jump over Diosber Hernández (2.05) and Manuel Rodríguez (1.95); Ronald Mencia won comfortably (77.97) in the hammer throw.
