Rome, April 29.- A delegation from the Federation of Agroindustry Workers of Italy (FLAI) departed for Cuba to demonstrate solidarity with that country, which faces a US blockade and threats of aggression, states a communique today.
"The mission to Cuba has a high political and social value: to be present with concrete aid to challenge those who want to annihilate the rebellious island and even threaten to drop bombs," expressed Giovanni Mininni, general secretary of FLAI, as he saw off the group, according to a note published on the union's official website.
"It is not enough to denounce our opposition to criminal aggression by participating in a demonstration under the peace flag, we must take concrete measures by going to the places where people suffer from the oppression of those who want to erect themselves as the new masters of the world," added the union leader.
Mininni emphasized regarding this initiative to support Cuba that "only through concrete solidarity can we be certain to bring hope back to those who yearn for a better world."
The delegation is led by Silvia Guaraldi, national leader of FLAI, and is composed of eleven members of that union federation, affiliated with the Italian General Confederation of Workers (CGIL).
On this solidarity trip, they are bringing to Cuba a new shipment of medicines, food and photovoltaic systems, to join the second European Convoy, which has been on the island since April 22 and is currently developing a broad program of activities.
"We depart for Cuba with hearts full of pride, driven by the deep desire to provide concrete aid to a people who have been resisting an increasingly severe blockade for years," stated Guaraldi, who noted that this Italian union representation will join the May 1 celebrations for Workers' Day in that nation.
"This mission is not just a trip, but an act of internationalism, fraternity and peace," stated the head of the delegation, who added: "We stand in solidarity with those who defend their history and present with dignity."
