Matanzas, Aug 18.- Two individuals were intercepted while attempting to steal eight aluminum tubes from the railing of one of the bridges on the Matanzas viaduct, in the La Playa area, Ministry of the Interior sources in the province informed Girón.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 12, when timely police action prevented the theft from being completed and avoided greater damage to the bridge structure.
According to the report provided to this editorial office, those involved were caught in flagrante and will receive "the corresponding treatment, as established by law," although the specific criminal charges that could be brought against them were not specified.
The Matanzas viaduct, a key road infrastructure for the connection with the Varadero tourist hub, has been the subject of several similar incidents in recent months. Minint sources have noted that, in many of these cases, the perpetrators take advantage of isolated installations or those with little surveillance to steal materials, which are then resold on the informal market.
Minint forces in the province are also facing an increase in the theft of dielectric oil from transformers, which has left entire communities without electricity and has caused damage to the energy system equipment. At the beginning of the month, the disappearance of a section of metal railings from another bridge in the city was also reported.
Authorities have intensified patrols and surveillance in vulnerable areas and are working in coordination with communities to report suspicious activities.
Minint has insisted that these acts threaten the common heritage and the safety of the population, and has reiterated its policy of "zero tolerance" toward illegalities and social indiscipline.
