Beekeeping in Guáimaro: Commitment and Future

Beekeeping in Guáimaro: Commitment and Future

March, 2026.- With the firm aim of surpassing honey production levels, beekeepers from Guáimaro are promoting various actions aimed at ensuring better sanitary and nutritional care of the hives.

To fulfill the plans for extracting wax and propolis, environmental protection measures are applied, including avoiding contamination from chemical fumigations and encouraging reforestation with melliferous flowering species such as bellflower, rosemary, and Indian creeper.

The most experienced in the activity point out that moving hives to areas with better floral conditions is an effective practice to stimulate breeding. They also emphasize that proper genetic selection of the queen ensures the health of the apiaries and prevents diseases such as American and European foulbrood, chalkbrood, and varroosis. As a preventive measure, it is also essential to have an abundant supply of fresh water near the combs.

Worldwide, the existence of bees faces serious risks. Therefore, multiple initiatives are being carried out in Guáimaro to protect the species, which according to specialists contributes to the pollination of around 75% of the crops with the greatest impact on agricultural and forestry production.

The development of beekeeping in the region not only strengthens substitution of imports but also provides significant benefits to the island's biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
