Guáimaro, January 8th - Primary health care in the easternmost municipality of Camagüey urges the population to avoid tobacco consumption and promote healthy lifestyles.
In the region, the majority of citizens are active smokers, while the rest are exposed to smoke in workplaces, homes, and public places, making them passive smokers.
According to collected testimonies, many residents acknowledge the need for nicotine and claim they cannot do without it. This habit becomes an addiction that deteriorates health, shortens life expectancy, and affects risk perception, which is essential for personal safety.
Research indicates that tobacco smoke contains about four thousand chemical substances, many of which are toxic and carcinogenic, reinforcing the importance of maintaining the fight against tobacco addiction.
Specialists warn that this responsibility does not fall solely on the Public Health system. Both young people and adults must reject tobacco consumption, and smokers, in particular, must become aware of the risks this practice entails, both for themselves and for those exposed to secondhand smoke.
