Washington, January 28 - Former U.S. President Joe Biden today rejected the immigration offensive in Minneapolis carried out by his successor, Donald Trump, and condemned the deaths of two city residents, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, at the hands of federal agents.
In an extensive message published on his social media account X, the former Democratic leader (2021-2025) called for “complete, fair, and transparent investigations” into the fatal shootings that ended the lives of Good on January 7 and Alex Pretti last Saturday.
According to Biden, what happened in Minneapolis “betrays our most fundamental values as Americans” and praised the people of Minnesota for their resilience following the tragic events.
The former head of state expressed the opinion that “they have suffered enough at the hands of this government” and emphasized that “violence and terrorism have no place in the United States, especially when it is our own government attacking American citizens.”
He wrote on the online platform that “now, justice demands thorough, fair, and transparent investigations into the deaths of the two Americans who lost their lives in the city they considered their home.”
The former president expressed his condolences—together with his wife Jill Biden—to the families of the victims. “We all mourn their senseless deaths,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Trump has found it necessary to recalibrate his messages as criticism grows over his administration’s response to the fatal outcome regarding Pretti and said he spoke with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.
Currently, more than a dozen Republican senators are requesting an investigation, including Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Thom Tillis (North Carolina), Jon Husted (Ohio), Jerry Moran (Kansas), and Ted Cruz (Texas).
Meanwhile, Senator Rand Paul and Representative Andrew Garbarino are calling for senior immigration agency officials to testify before Congress.
Local media highlighted yesterday that the shooting death of a second civilian protester in Minneapolis has cracked the Republican Party’s firm defense of President Trump’s deportation policies.
Some Republicans are concerned that Trump’s deportation campaign has gone too far.
“People want stability and confidence, and this doesn’t seem like stability or confidence,” warned a source close to the administration.
Video footage showing the last moments of Alex Pretti's life, the way federal immigration agents struck him, and the close-range shots that took his life have sparked an outcry that crosses party lines.
