Spain with Sánchez at Summits in Brazil and Colombia

Madrid, Nov 6.- Spain will be represented at the highest level at the summits in Brazil and Colombia, with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, who began his Latin American tour today.

According to sources from the Palacio de la Moncloa, Sánchez will first travel to the Brazilian city of Belém, where on Thursday the president of the South American giant, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will lead a meeting of heads of state and government in the run-up to the COP30 Climate Change Summit.

Lula da Silva's idea, according to official leaks, is to fine-tune the arrangements and agreements that will emerge from the meeting in Belém, seen by many as the last chance in the global effort to curb atmospheric global warming.

This will be an opportunity for Sánchez to emphasize Spain's commitment to climate issues and its absolute adherence to the Green Agenda, as well as its desire to strengthen ties with Latin America and the Caribbean in these areas.

In fact, the third vice president and minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, noted that the European Union (EU) agreement to commit to a 90 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2040 is "a demonstration that this green agenda is more alive than ever."

Aagesen, who will accompany the Spanish head of government at COP30, admitted in an interview with RNE that "the negotiation has been very complicated," but it is hopeful.

She pointed out that the European green agenda is necessary to provide certainty for all investments in the energy transition and also for citizens to know that Europe is committed to green initiatives.

Although unofficial sources acknowledge that both summits, especially the one between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Santa Marta, Colombia, may be influenced by current global geopolitical dynamics, they are confident in achieving significant outcomes.

Spain aims to consolidate its European leadership with Latin America, and in this regard, Sánchez will speak about energy transition before the plenary and in a parallel session.

The Spanish model of energy transition will be the main banner that the leader will showcase in Belém, in addition to highlighting the EU agreement, although it is not as ambitious as Moncloa had hoped.

SANTA MARTA

Santa Marta, a coastal city on Colombia's Atlantic coast, will host the IV EU-CELAC summit, continuing this type of meeting following the previous one held in Brussels two years ago.

However, the event is surrounded by many uncertainties due to pressures and threats from U.S. President Donald Trump against countries regarding the alleged complicity of Gustavo Petro's government with drug trafficking.

Denounced by Petro himself, it is certain that notable absences are already anticipated at the EU-CELAC summit, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

In any case, Spain does not believe that the content of EU-CELAC exchanges will vary and is confident of achieving substantial progress while hoping that issues between the U.S. and Latin American nations remain on the sidelines.
