Innovation and Science: Keys to Revitalizing Agricultural Production in Camagüey

Camagüey, Dec. – For the people of Camagüey, meeting the annual planting plans for various crops and improving dairy and meat production are fundamental priorities. In this context, science becomes an essential tool to optimize agricultural yield and promote sustainable development in the region.

The provincial government, in collaboration with various institutions and agencies, is implementing several initiatives aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector. This effort is also supported by local scientists, who work on projects seeking to optimize production.

A notable example is the Livestock Development Project (PRODEGAN), backed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the French Development Agency. This program focuses on land preparation for production, the construction of water reservoirs, and the provision of advanced technological equipment for cow milk processing. Additionally, it offers technical assistance to improve cattle reproduction and genetics, crucial aspects for the sector’s development.

In Camagüey, a comprehensive development model has been launched that integrates science and innovation with the goal of increasing food collection. This approach is supported by six scientific centers in the region, as well as by the Cuban Association of Animal Production and the Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians.

Another highly relevant proposal is the Forest-Livestock-Environment project, which focuses on silvopastoral practices as a strategy to make livestock farming more sustainable. This initiative is led by the State Forestry Service and seeks to integrate livestock production with natural resource conservation.

However, the lack of modern technology, due to the economic blockade imposed by the United States government, limits access to essential innovations that could transform production. Furthermore, climate change continues to affect agricultural cycles, causing significant losses of cultivable land.

With a strategy focused on innovation and sustainability, the province strives to overcome obstacles and maximize its potential, paving the way toward development that will benefit both its farmers and the community at large.
