Esmeralda, Camagüey, Apr 13.- The implementation of local food systems is a top priority for the agricultural sector in Esmeralda.
The municipality plays a crucial role in promoting food sovereignty through the development of family gardens and plots as part of the "Cultiva tu pedacito" (Cultivate your little piece) initiative, developed by the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR).
In conjunction with this, the Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture Program, designed to achieve greater local sustainability, is one of the territory's strengths aimed at increasing food production.
In the current national context, it is necessary to work towards finding exploitable opportunities and strengthening the implementation of gardens and plots in all the popular councils of the district.
Similarly, it is vital to involve local educational centers in these actions, cultivating vegetables, legumes, and seasonings in school gardens, which support the nutrition of students and workers in each institution.
In response to the complex energy situation affecting the country, animal traction is being put into practice for fundamental agricultural tasks in our locality, reviving a peasant tradition that serves as a viable and strategic alternative to guarantee food production amidst the economic blockade facing Cuba.
This practice, far from being a setback, constitutes an intelligent adaptation to current circumstances, utilizing native and sustainable resources to keep the productive base active.
Increasing food production to meet the demands of the Cuban table, as well as to replace imports, is of utmost importance to the population; more than just a phrase, it is an urgent necessity to ensure greater solvency for everyone.
Ultimately, the moral is simple: we must work harder. Establishing the fundamental premise that food sovereignty is everyone's task.
