Santa Cruz del Sur, Camagüey, Feb. 10 - In Santa Cruz del Sur, the 30th anniversary celebration of the State Forestry Service (SEF) was held, an event that highlighted the achievements and progress of this institution in the protection and conservation of the environment.
During the event, participants emphasized the successful restoration of the mangroves in Playa Bonita, a project promoted by the Mi Costa Project in collaboration with the local coastal residents and the Silviculture and Hydraulic Resources Base Business Unit (UEB). This initiative not only aims to restore the marine ecosystem but also to promote environmental sustainability in the region.
The SEF also presented its role in controlling the indiscriminate cutting of invasive exotic species, such as ipil ipil, almendra, and rosquita, which have been harmful to the coastline. The need to replace these invasive species with native plants was stressed, thus contributing to the ecological balance of the area.
Additionally, the issue of unauthorized bird hunting was addressed, highlighting the importance of enforcing sanctions on those who violate established regulations to ensure the protection of local wildlife.
During the commemoration, information was provided about the activities carried out at the Silviculture UEB nursery, located in La Cupertina. This nursery is dedicated to cultivating seedlings of timber and food species, which is vital for the conservation of the region’s flora and fauna. The work carried out there is essential to strengthen the ecosystem and ensure the availability of natural resources for future generations.
The 30th anniversary celebration of the SEF was not only a moment to reflect on its journey but also an opportunity to reaffirm the institution’s commitment to preserving the natural environment. The importance of community participation in these efforts was highlighted, emphasizing that collaboration between the SEF and local inhabitants is fundamental to achieving a positive environmental impact.
This event symbolizes not only a milestone in the history of the SEF but also a call to action and environmental awareness in Santa Cruz del Sur. The protection of ecosystems and the promotion of sustainable development are challenges that require the commitment and joint effort of all stakeholders, thereby ensuring a healthier future for nature and the communities that depend on it.
