Guáimaro communities celebrate International Workers' Day

Guáimaro, April 24 — The celebration of May 1st, International Workers' Day, offers a fitting tribute to the Martyrs of Chicago, workers who in 1886 rose united in their demand for the eight-hour workday and other labor claims.

Since then, in many parts of the world, the working class takes to the streets to demand their rights, and in others, they remember with admiration and respect those men and women who fought for what is just and dignified.

In the largest of the Antilles, each May 1st becomes a people's festival that gathers in squares and streets to celebrate the glory achieved in the labor sphere since January 1959.

Rural communities also hold parades and mass gatherings, which is why, in advance, in the popular councils of Cascorro and Martí, belonging to the easternmost territory of Camagüey, their residents march in unified fashion to confirm their eternal commitment to the Homeland.

This happened this Friday morning in both locations, when in unison, labor entities distinguished by their workforces, students, federated women, and the general public, marched together to the square to condemn the unjust U.S. blockade against the island and raise their voices in repudiation of the interfering measures sustained by the U.S. governments for decades.

At the front of each gathering, the main political and government authorities, who together with the young people, once again demonstrated the unity that identifies and elevates us as a people.

The events in Cascorro and Martí for the celebration of International Workers' Day represent the prelude to what will be the festivities of the Cuban Workers' Central (CTC) on May 1st in the municipal seat.
