The volcanic Puracé maintains seismic activity in Colombia

Bogotá, January 14th.- Forty-five days after the authorities declared an Orange Alert due to the activity recorded at the Puracé volcano, seismic signals associated with the movement of fluids inside it continue today, according to warnings from the competent authorities in Colombia.

According to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), the earthquakes are located beneath the crater, at depths of less than one kilometer, and are related to processes of circulation and the release of volcanic gases into the atmosphere.

The agency also warned that sulfur dioxide emissions continue and that gas emissions through cracks in the craters of the Curiquinga and Piocollo volcanoes persist, although no ash emissions have been identified so far.

The temperature inside the Puracé volcano crater, associated with gas emissions, continues to show a decrease in the values recorded by satellites, the SGC added.

The most recent bulletin from the agency also reported the detection, on January 12th, of the occurrence of a secondary mudflow (lahar) in the northeastern sector of the volcano, identified through seismic records and which, due to its size, did not pose a risk to the population.

This phenomenon was associated with heavy rainfall and the remobilization of ash deposited in recent weeks in the upper parts of the Puracé, Piocollo, and Curiquinga volcanoes, the agency elaborated.

Finally, the SGC reiterated its recommendation to avoid approaching the Puracé, Piocollo, and Curiquinga craters, located in the Los Coconucos volcanic mountain range in the Cauca department, in the southwest of the country.
