Caracas, December 3rd – The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, revealed today details of his telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, which he said was conducted in a tone of respect and was even cordial.
During a working day in Petare, Miranda state, to supervise progress on the route to consolidating the government in the “Simón Rodríguez” Commune, the leader referred to the prudence he acquired during his six years as Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic.
He expressed that during that period he learned diplomatic prudence and that, as President, with that foundation and the lessons he received from his mentor, Commander Hugo Chávez, he “prefers prudence—not the microphone diplomacy.”
When there are important matters, “it must be done silently until the right moment,” he emphasized.
The head of state revealed that he received a call and spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump in a conversation that “was in a tone of respect, and I can even say it was cordial” between the U.S. and Venezuelan leaders.
Maduro stressed that if that call “means steps are being taken toward a respectful dialogue, from state to state, from country to country, then dialogue and diplomacy are welcome, because we will always seek peace.”
“Welcome to dialogue, diplomacy and peace,” the leader exclaimed in English amid applause from those present.
Referring to the American people and its youth, the leader expressed that they are tired of eternal wars and “have marks on their collective psychology as a country” from conflicts in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
The President said he knows the United States very well, where he visited the Congress many times to greet his congressman and senator friends when he was a member and founder of the Boston Group, and also knows many of its cities.
Maduro reaffirmed that the path for the people of the United States and Venezuela “must be one of respect, diplomacy, and dialogue.”
He reiterated that he likes prudence and respect and said, “with the favor of God and our Commander of Commanders, Mr. Jesus Christ, everything will turn out well for the peace, independence, dignity, and future of Venezuela.”
