Camagüey Provincial Hospital continues providing services despite limitations

Nearly six and a half decades after its creation, the Manuel Ascunce Domenech Provincial Clinical and Surgical Teaching Hospital continues to provide services, despite the limitations of materials and resources conditioned by the current socioeconomic context and the tightening of the U.S. government's blockade against Cuba.

At a press conference, the institution's director, Dr. Rodolfo Emilio Domínguez, explained some of the motivations for the upcoming events, including the accreditation of the Neurology and Imaging specialties from October 27 to 31; the José Manuel Arrieta Regional Imaging Memorial Day; and the 25th anniversary of the Cardiovascular Care Center on November 15.

He mentioned as one of the achievements the launch of the new water treatment and osmosis plant for hemodialysis for patients with chronic kidney disease, which allows for proper operation of the equipment and the reuse of water in the Nephrology Service, which operates 24 hours a day.

As of September 30, more than 170,000 people who live in Camaguey have been treated at the institution, and 7,000 of them have required inpatient care, with just over 95 percent of discharges from the hospital being satisfactory.

The executive added that approximately 11,000 surgeries have been performed, a still unfavorable indicator due to the high number of patients on waiting lists, due to resource limitations, particularly in the ophthalmology specialty.

More than 1,500 employees, including physicians, technologists, nurses, psychologists, assistants, maintenance staff, and support staff, are working around the clock to ensure this healthcare center continues to enjoy the national recognition it deserves.
