Camagüey, January 31st - Achieving the gradual recovery of the housing construction program and reversing the deterioration of the housing stock are among the priorities in government strategies that today focus on addressing an issue so sensitive for the population.
In recent years, the construction of new homes has been marked by limited resources, a shortage of skilled labor on-site, a lack of technicians in the municipal housing offices, and delays in procedures requested by the population, such as applying for construction permits and obtaining the habitable status once the construction phase of the buildings is completed.
In response to directives from the central government, Camagüey is working to reorganize the housing program which, in the plan set for 2026, aims to complete 128 homes under the state plan, 229 subsidized houses funded by the State budget for people with low economic incomes, and 244 through self-effort.
In discussions with housing officials and construction companies in the territory, the coordinator of programs and objectives of the provincial government, Jesús Alonso, reported that a schedule was established to achieve greater progress in the works, for which, he affirmed, the inspection of permits and the approval of permits to start construction actions with the necessary technical preparation and within the agreed timeline are crucial.
During the current year, work will focus primarily on rehabilitation, maintenance, and new constructions based on budgets approved in the 13 municipalities; priority will be given to buildings nearing completion that depend on minimal resources.
Additionally, the plan includes continuing the initiation and development of new homes, eliminating dirt floors, and addressing the maternal and child program. It was reported that to achieve the necessary boost in housing construction, Camagüey must seek alternatives to increase local production of construction materials, expedite the adaptation of premises for housing and multifamily buildings, as well as incorporate the construction of housing modules based on maritime containers.
This year’s construction program will also address homes affected by meteorological events and other agencies, totaling 671 homes.
