Guáimaro, Nov 24 – The milk cooling tank in the village of Las Canteras, part of the Pueblo Nuevo popular council, belonging to the easternmost municipality of Camagüey, receives around 200 liters of this food daily.

According to technician Adolfina Garay Díaz, over 10,000 liters of the valuable product were collected last month. However, current figures show a marked decrease in production during this period.
Part of the milk collected at this center is allocated to the local store, where three liters are delivered daily for the diet of sick people and four children’s consumption.

Farmers cite several reasons explaining the shortfall in delivery: bad weather conditions, non-payment for the product, low livestock yields, and the illegal theft and slaughter of cattle — a recurrent crime affecting the area's cattle population.
This refrigeration facility was created to facilitate milk collection from local producers, who previously had to travel to the village of Palo Seco. The poor road conditions caused many to stop delivering milk, which led to the establishment of this infrastructure in Las Canteras. (Photo courtesy of the author)
