UN: Cuba alerts about escalation of aggressions against Venezuela

Havana, Dec. — Cuba alerted the United Nations Security Council about the escalation of aggressions by the United States government against Venezuela, in violation of the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and International Law.

Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the UN, described the US naval blockade of the South American nation, along with acts of piracy and maritime terrorism in international waters of the Caribbean Sea, as "irresponsible and unprecedented" actions.

According to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during his intervention at the meeting, the island’s diplomat strongly condemned the "arbitrary and politically motivated" decision by the United States to designate the Venezuelan government as a foreign terrorist organization.

Soberón Guzmán denounced the manipulation of terrorism as a political weapon and the double standards of a policy that undermines genuine international efforts to combat this scourge.

He emphasized that these actions seek to isolate Venezuela internationally, increase pressure, and escalate an aggression with unpredictable consequences for the peace, security, and stability of the region.

He recalled that these provocations add to unilateral coercive measures, economic strangulation, smear campaigns, and attacks against strategic Venezuelan institutions, including recent cyberattacks, as part of a psychological war aimed at overthrowing the constitutional government of President Nicolás Maduro.

He also pointed out that the new United States National Security Strategy, including the so-called "Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine," deliberately ignores the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.

The Cuban ambassador demanded respect for the sovereignty, independence, and the right of Venezuela to freely determine its destiny without external interference, and called on the international community to halt this dangerous escalation that threatens the peace of Latin America and the Caribbean.

He also reiterated his rejection of the extension of sanctions and unilateral coercive measures against Venezuela, as they contravene International Law, and reaffirmed Cuba’s firm and unwavering solidarity with the Venezuelan people and government.
