Camagüey.– The Camagüey Meteorological Center will strengthen its aerological activity by receiving a station to carry out actual atmospheric soundings over the province, as part of a project by the Institute of Meteorology, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), and with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cuba.
This radiosonde process will allow obtaining information on variables at different tropospheric levels, which is highly valuable for forecasts, especially very short-term ones, and for studies in Atmospheric Physics, stated Beatriz Martínez Pérez, director of the institution in Camagüey.
The activity, she highlighted, has a historical precedent in Camagüey that will be reactivated and strengthened with the start of the project, which seeks to improve the quality and accuracy of weather forecasts, especially in the face of extreme meteorological phenomena such as hurricanes.
A publication from UNDP Cuba on its official Facebook profile assures that the initiative includes the installation of a new surface meteorological station and two radiosonde stations, as well as the modernization of eight existing stations in the country.
It also indicates that the project will receive support from the specialized fund Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) of the United Nations.
Through the technologies provided by the new project, Cuba will expand and strengthen its national meteorological observation network, benefiting the quality and precision of weather forecasts, especially for cyclones, events that impact the Caribbean country each year.
