Community Services Workers' Day: a call for institutional and community commitment

Camagüey - Every February 15th, Cuba celebrates the Day of the Communal Services Worker, a day that recognizes the work of those who maintain street cleaning, care for green areas, and provide funeral services, all essential for community life. This year’s tribute comes in a context marked by visible tensions in the city of Camagüey.

The provincial company has an approved staff of 4,874 positions, of which only 3,264 are filled, representing 66.9%. Although progress has been made compared to last year’s 60%, municipalities such as Camagüey, Nuevitas, Florida, Guáimaro, and Santa Cruz del Sur continue to face labor shortages. Wage competition with other sectors and the lack of appeal in previous offers caused many workers to leave, and although more advantageous payment systems now exist, the necessary staffing levels have not yet been reached.

The collection of solid waste largely depends on animal traction as an alternative in the face of fuel shortages. Of the 674 horse-drawn carts needed in the province, only 269 are available, with Camagüey in a critical situation: only thirteen are operational. In the municipal capital, availability is minimal, forcing prioritization of existing fuel to maintain cleaning on the main roads. At the provincial level, support is strengthened with eight tractors and carts in Camagüey, as well as a brigade with loaders and trucks, but coverage remains insufficient.

Yordanka Isabel De la Torre López, director of the Joaquín de Agüero establishment, acknowledges that the city has lost attributes that distinguished it as one of the cleanest in the country. Illegal dumpsites are proliferating, fueled by social indiscipline and lack of community support.

The consequences of this reality go beyond aesthetics; waste accumulation promotes the spread of arboviruses and other public health risks. Urban cleanliness, more than an image attribute, becomes a factor of sanitary protection.

On this anniversary, official recognition extends to street sweepers, brush cutters, and cart drivers. The commemoration of the Day of the Communal Services Worker is not only a tribute but also a call to reflection. The current situation demands greater institutional and community commitment to restore the city’s cleanliness and guarantee a healthy environment. May this anniversary be an impetus for change and thus ensure a healthier environment for all.
